A Special Day Out

Many venues describe their grass as 'hallowed turf' and this is surely some of the most legendary ...
but where is it?

Well here we are at the front of the members pavilion, at Lords cricket ground - the home of cricket.
We ignored the fact that  as Surrey supporters of course we think that the Oval is the true home of cricket
(especially as it was the first ground in England to host international Test cricket in September 1880).
But Lords is the most famous ground of all and the staff there were so friendly and couldn't have been more helpful.

Thanks to a kind collaboration of ShootingStar CHASE and the MCC
we, and several other families supported by SSC, were treated to a fantastic box...

an amazing menu ...

an exciting days cricket (Middlesex v Somerset) ...

and a guided tour of the museum and ground (here is the back of the media centre).
Photography is not allowed in the museum but we saw the actual Ashes urn and a bat and boots used by W G Grace!

We didn't go hungry!

'W G' in a lovely, leafy corner of the ground.

  1. That must have been one very special day Jerry. Like you and Thomas I'm a cricket fan (and also a Surrey supporter) so such a visit will make up for our (inevitable) relegation!

    1. Yes Steve, as you say relegation looks more than likely - though Thomas keeps trying to work out permutations where we might yet escape.

  2. Bonjour,

Merci de partager avec nous ce lieu. Je reste admirative, le cricket n'est pas franchement un jeu visionné en France.
    gros bisous

    1. Thanks for popping by Martine. Somebody once told me that France are the current Olympic cricket silver medallists (I think it was last at the Olympics in 1900)!

  3. Dear Jerry, I know little about cricket! But it is so clear from your post that you and Thomas were happy to be there ... that I wanted to be there to be happy with you and enjoy the beautiful buffet!

Magnificent green lawn and incredibly smooth ... the dream that every gardener calls Italian
"English lawn" ... but it is intended, almost always, to remain a dream because of a climate and a different terrain!

    1. Oh Rita cricket is easily our favourite game and the grass they play on is perfection but the ground-staff are just as attentive to the structure of the soil on which it grows. It would have been wonderful for you to have joined us and yes I'm sure you would have loved all the food and drink. Mid morning we were served tea and biscuits. Lunch included bridge rolls of: poached chicken with little baby gem lettuce and Caesar dressing; Atlantic prawn and avocado; free range egg mayonnaise and cress. Then mini steak and ale pies; smoked haddock with spinach and mushroom risotto cakes; and a broccoli, mozzarella, basil and pecorino tart. For dessert we had white chocolate and hazelnut mousse. Then when the players took tea we were served the 'Lord's traditional afternoon cream tea' with a selection of finger sandwiches, plain and fruit scones, Devon clotted cream, English raspberries, lemon curd and preserves, freshly made miniature pastries and 'afternoon tea cake' - phew, we didn't go hungry!!

    1. Thanks yes I'm glad I was able to convey how wonderful it was. Nearly two years ago on Thomas' 18th birthday ShootingStarCHASE and Surrey gave him a years membership and the same for me to accompany him. We spent so much time at the Oval and this trip to Lords brought it all back to us.

    1. I'm sure you would have enjoyed it too Francesc. I'm glad Spain is not so familiar with Cricket - if their football ability is anything to go by, they would beat everyone at Cricket too!
